The Institute's
Purpose
The purpose of the Institute is to promote high standards of knowledge,
qualifications and competence amongst those in control of seagoing craft
both ashore and afloat.
The Role of the
Nautical Institute
The Institute fulfils its role in many different ways. Membership by proven
qualifications helps to set standards. The technical committees ensure that
professional opinion and advice is fed back to the industry's decision
making bodies. The publications, written by practitioners for practitioners,
provide the best operational guidance available and the branches encourage
professional development in local areas.
The UAE Branch
Our Branch has been in existence since the early 80's when it comprised
of 8 founder members who met in each other's villas. We now have over 190
members and 'friends' on our books of which almost 100 are fully paid up
members. Anyone connected with the industry is very welcome indeed at any
of our activities and we actively encourage companion and student memberships.
The Branch meetings are a monthly event except for the holiday months
of July and August and as befits such a social branch, our Christmas parties
are an event not to be missed. The highlight of our year is the annual The
Marine Charity Ball held in March of each year which seats 700 to a glittering
social evening and regularly raises over US$ 40,000 for marine charities.
The UAE branch has a policy of extending a warm welcome to all visiting
seafarers and shore based personnel. If you are fortunate enough to find
yourself in Dubai or any of the nearby ports, e.g. Sharjah, Jebel Ali,
Dubai Drydocks or are standing by, attending a vessel or waiting for an
arrival, please feel free to make contact via our Branch Secretary, Kevin
Leach-Smith (kevin.leachsmith@aramco.com)
or committee member Rev. Stephen Miller of the Mission to Seafarers.
